The details

An apartment lockout has one twist: the door belongs to someone else. That changes who you call first.

Try these first

  • The property manager or landlord; many keep a spare.
  • A roommate, partner or friend with a copy.
  • Another safe way in, without climbing or forcing windows.

Why not force it

Damage to the door or frame usually comes out of the deposit, and some leases treat it as a breach. A locksmith visit is almost always cheaper.

What the locksmith needs

Photo ID with the address, or a lease or utility bill. Some complexes also want the manager's OK before a unit is opened.

Keys lost for good?

Ask the manager about rekeying. Many agree as long as they receive a copy of the new key.

Avoiding the next one

  • Leave a spare with someone nearby.
  • Keys in hand before the door closes.
  • Ask the landlord about a keypad deadbolt.
