The details

It's usually a small moment: groceries in one hand, the door swinging shut with the keys on the seat. Most car lockouts end without a scratch, as long as nobody improvises.

Why improvising goes wrong

A modern door hides wiring, window motors and side-airbag sensors. A coat hanger or wedge pushed in blind can scratch paint, tear the weatherstrip or unplug something that only a dealer can fix.

How a locksmith does it

Purpose-made tools reach the lock or the handle linkage from outside, with protection for paint and seals. If the key is lost rather than locked in, a new key or fob can often be cut and programmed on site.

First, safety

A child or pet inside on a warm day: call 911 now. The Valley gets hot quickly in the afternoon.

What to have ready

  • Year, make and model
  • Exact location, including the parking lot and row
  • ID and the registration once the car is open

What it costs

Lockouts start at $19.00 plus the $29.00 service call fee on the price list. New keys and fobs start at $100.00. See the automotive page.
